Airbnb has partnered with the council in the London borough of Waltham Forest to launch a new trial initiative focused on helping local communities benefit from the growing trend of home-sharing. This project aims to encourage more residents in the area to open their homes to short-term guests by offering them support and guidance throughout the process. The partnership seeks to create opportunities for residents to monetise underused spaces, whether it’s a spare room or an entire property, by becoming occasional hosts on Airbnb.

To ensure the success of the initiative, Airbnb is providing valuable resources in the form of experienced Airbnb Ambassadors and current landlords who already use the platform. These individuals will act as mentors to guide new hosts through the process, helping them understand the platform’s requirements, best practices for hosting, and tips on maximising their earning potential. With their expertise, first-time hosts can feel confident in their ability to offer a great guest experience while making the most of their space.

In addition to the support provided to local residents, the project will also focus on promoting Waltham Forest as a destination for travellers. Airbnb will feature the borough on a dedicated landing page on its website, which will highlight its unique offerings and appeal as a place to stay. This initiative is designed to not only benefit potential hosts but also draw more visitors to the area, encouraging tourism and boosting the local economy.

The collaboration between Airbnb and Waltham Forest is an important step in expanding the benefits of home-sharing to a wider audience. By empowering local residents to become part of the home-sharing community, the project aims to create a more inclusive economy where everyone can participate. If successful, it could serve as a model for other boroughs and cities, leading to a broader adoption of home-sharing and its potential to improve communities across the country.

Airbnb has reported that, in 2022, spending by both guests and hosts on the platform contributed significantly to London’s economy. According to the latest available data, this activity supported around 22,500 jobs across the city and generated a £592m boost to the Greater London economy. Additionally, over 40% of UK hosts revealed that the income they earned from hosting on Airbnb has been instrumental in helping them stay in their homes, highlighting the financial benefits of participating in the home-sharing economy.

The collaboration between Airbnb and the Waltham Forest council aims to extend these benefits to more diverse communities and families within the borough. By encouraging local residents to engage in home-sharing, the partnership seeks to empower individuals and families, helping them tap into the tourism economy. This initiative will provide opportunities for those who may not have considered hosting before to explore this potential source of income while contributing to the local economy.

To further support this initiative, Airbnb has committed £25,000 to fund grassroots events and cultural initiatives throughout Waltham Forest. This contribution is intended to help build awareness of the programme, provide resources for aspiring hosts, and promote the borough as a vibrant destination for tourists. By backing these community-led initiatives, Airbnb is working to ensure that the benefits of home-sharing reach a broader audience, fostering growth and economic opportunity across the borough.

This partnership represents a significant step in making home-sharing more accessible and beneficial to a wider range of residents. By providing both financial support and guidance, Airbnb aims to create a more inclusive and resilient economy for local communities, helping them capitalise on the opportunities the tourism sector offers. If successful, this project could serve as a model for other areas looking to harness the power of home-sharing to support their local economy.

Amanda Cupples, the general manager of Northern Europe at Airbnb, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Home-sharing can benefit everyday families and local businesses, and we are excited to welcome hosts from Waltham Forest into our community. We are proud to be partnering with the borough to spotlight this cultural hub to guests. We hope this partnership will attract more visitors to Waltham Forest, supporting local businesses, generating jobs, and benefiting the community.”

The sentiment was echoed by a spokesperson from Waltham Forest council, who highlighted the significance of the initiative for local residents. “This initiative is a great opportunity to offer a new way for residents to explore alternative income ideas with experienced support and guidance,” the spokesperson said. “The partnership with Airbnb will help to highlight our cultural offer, drive visitor footfall and investment in the borough, whilst supporting grassroots cultural activity and our diverse communities.”

Both Airbnb and the council are hopeful that this collaboration will not only benefit residents looking to earn additional income but also boost the local economy and cultural landscape. By drawing attention to the borough’s unique cultural offerings, the initiative aims to attract tourists and create opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

This initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to community engagement, where both businesses and residents stand to gain. The support provided by Airbnb, along with the council’s commitment to promoting the area, could lead to a revitalisation of Waltham Forest, bringing in new visitors, generating employment, and supporting local growth.
