Green Party deputy leader Mothin Ali has been linked to two buy-to-let properties in Leeds, despite the party’s policy calling for a major reduction in private landlordism.
Ali is the sole director and controlling shareholder of MA Holdings, a company that owns the two properties. One was purchased in June 2022 and the other in March 2025. There is no indication that Ali personally profits from the properties.
Both purchases took place before the Green Party adopted its policy on private landlords in October 2025.
Company Owns Two Rental Properties
Companies House records show that MA Holdings was incorporated in December 2021, with Ali listed as its only director and the person with significant control over the company.
He owns more than 75% of the company’s shares. Its registered activities include buying and selling property, letting and operating owned or leased property, and providing property management services.
The properties were bought using buy-to-let mortgages.
The previous owner and occupier of the second property confirmed to the BBC that Ali’s company had purchased the property and understood that it was intended to be rented out.
The Green Party said Ali’s involvement with the properties was connected to his responsibilities towards vulnerable close family members.
A party spokesperson told the BBC that Ali had acted “solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities”. The party said it had provided personal information to the BBC in confidence but would not make those details public in order to protect his family.
The BBC has not published those details because they relate to private family matters.
Green Party Policy on Landlords
The issue has attracted attention because of the Green Party’s position on private landlords.
At its annual conference in October 2025, Green Party members backed a motion titled “Abolish landlords”. The policy argued that the private rented sector contributes to wealth being transferred from tenants to landlords and called for significant changes to the housing system.
The party’s current policy aims to reduce the size of the private rented sector over time while expanding social housing.
Its proposals include greater regulation and taxation of private rentals, rent controls, changes to buy-to-let lending and giving councils greater powers to purchase rental properties when they come onto the market.
Ali Says He Supports the Policy
The Green Party has said that Ali continues to support its policy, despite the properties being owned through his company.
When asked whether he had taken steps to change the situation since the policy was adopted, a party spokesperson said Ali fully supports the approach.
The party also clarified that its policy does not literally mean every private landlord would immediately disappear. Instead, it would introduce measures intended to reduce private renting while increasing the supply of socially rented homes.
What Does the Green Party Want to Change?
The party’s housing proposals are aimed at gradually shifting the balance of the housing market away from private renting and towards social housing.
Green Party MP Carla Denyer previously said that, despite the attention-grabbing title of the conference motion, it did not actually mean that landlords would simply be abolished.
Instead, she said the policies were designed to tackle the housing crisis, strengthen tenants’ rights and improve housing conditions.
The proposals would include measures such as rent controls and an expansion of council housing, which the party believes would eventually reduce the proportion of homes in the private rented sector.
Questions Over Ali’s Property Holdings
Ali’s connection to the two Leeds properties has therefore raised questions because of the contrast between his position within the Green Party and its policy towards private landlords.
However, the party maintains that his property arrangements were made in the interests of vulnerable family members and that he supports its wider plans for reforming the private rented sector.
The situation highlights the tension between the Green Party’s proposed long-term changes to private renting and the existing property arrangements of one of its senior figures.
